October 10, 2005: TV series news from Episode III DVD press event -- UPDATED x2

Example

Recently a press junket was held at Skywalker Ranch to promote the upcoming Episode III DVD. At the Q&A, Rick McCallum spilled some more information on the two upcoming Star Wars TV series: the animated continuation of Clone Wars and the live-action series bridging Episodes III and IV:

"The animation is being done right now as we speak, I mean it's starting to prep. And you'll be able to talk to Rob Coleman about that, who's deeply involved in it. That's being done here at the Ranch. A lot of the effects will be done in Singapore. But that won't really start moving forward, I mean it's just now conceptual work and script work now. I think George is trying to get 13 scripts done first before we really get into the pipeline of it. But that'll start happening probably [at] the end of March.

"And the live-action television series is something we're planning for just at the beginning of 2007 and we're just starting to interview writers and trying to really figure out, you know, which direction.... It is going to be much darker, much grittier, it's much more character-based. He envisions somewhere like 100 hours between Episode III and Episode IV with a lot of characters that we haven't met but have been developed in other, you know, in some of the novels and other things. So I'm really excited about that because I think finally we can have the opportunity to answer everybody's questions once and for all by the time we finish the series."

[...]

"Principal photography will take place all around the world, probably with a base in Sydney. And, yes, we will be shooting in hi-def. Or, if anything else evolves within the next 12 months, you know, that would replace hi-def. I don't see that happening, but there may be new and more, or less expensive cameras with more optical imagery or optical discs that we record on. But basically it will be hi-def, yes."

He also talked about the Young Indiana Jones DVDs, Indiana Jones IV, 3-D Star Wars, and George Lucas' upcoming projects including Red Tails about the Tuskegee airmen. You can read some coverage at ComingSoon.net and GalacticHunter.com. If you're a Fan Club member, you can listen to the Rick McCallum portion of the Q&A here on StarWars.com Hyperspace.

UPDATE 10/12:

Another section of the Q&A with Frank Oz and Rob Coleman is now available for your listening pleasure.

Rob said:

"I am involved in the animated series right now. We're here at the Ranch as Rick said, and we're currently working on the project and I'm very excited about that. The live action's a little further out and so we haven't had the discussions yet. But knowing George, and knowing the franchise, there's going to be animated characters in there--we just haven't discussed them yet."

UPDATE 10/13:

Another section of the Q&A with everybody's favorite Sith megalomaniac, Ian McDiarmid, is now available as well.

October 5, 2005: Toon Volume II action figures. Now with 200% more images!

Not long ago, entries for two additional Clone Wars action figure multipacks appeared in the StarWars.com Cargo Bay. As you can see, the first pack is said to include Anakin Skywalker, Saesee Tiin, and a Clone Trooper, while the other will have Obi-Wan Kenobi, Commander Cody, and General Grievous. The Cargo Bay lists a release date of November 14. No other details are known at this time. However, if the earlier DVD Commemorative 3-packs are any indication, it seems likely these would be Wal-Mart exclusives and done in the Animated style (as contrasted with the 2003 movie-realistic line).

More recently, Chinese-Starwars.com posted pictures of what appear to be the new Commander Cody and Episode-III style clone trooper figures. (As far as I know these have not been otherwise confirmed.) Click the thumbnail below to see them!
