VIPs

From time to time we will quote people that have a direct effect on STAR WARS publishing and the events of the Clone Wars (i.e. editors, authors, artists.) We call them VIPs and will always highlight their name with this color. So whenever you see pink, know that it's from a credited (official) source. Here's a few of them we've quoted so far:

  • Chris Cerasi (Darth Poodle), former editor at LucasBooks
  • Leland Chee (Tasty Taste), Keeper of the Holocron for LucasBooks
  • Jan Duursema, artist of numerous STAR WARS comics
  • Pablo Hidalgo (Pabawan), starwars.com administrator and HoloNet News writer
  • John Ostrander, writer of numerous STAR WARS comics
  • Sue Rostoni (Sremmuy), editor for LucasBooks
  • Philip Simon, editor at Dark Horse Comics
  • Randy Stradley, senior editor for Dark Horse Comics
  • Vic Wertz, assistant editor for Paizo Publishing (Star Wars Insider)

Timeline Placement

You may notice that our timeline is somewhat different than the timelines in the published materials. In those timelines, they place everything relative to ATTACK OF THE CLONES. Everything is 1 month after AOTC, 10 weeks after AOTC etc...

In our timeline, we figure everything by the HoloNet News dating system. According to HoloNet News, dating Attack of the Clones ended on 13:5:23, equivalent to May 23rd of the 13 year after the Great Re-synchronization. We also assume the calendar to be identical to Earth's 12-month calendar, which seems to be what the publishers are doing, but that's another thing in itself.

The main thing is that because of this, the dating might seem different. An item that the publishers have placed as 1.5 months after AOTC will be in Month 2 after AOTC in our timeline. Why? Think of it this way: AOTC ended on May 23rd. One and a half months after May 23rd would roughly be around July 7th. AOTC is in Month of Attack of the Clones...13:5 (May), so the above item would be in Month 2 after ATTACK OF THE CLONES...13:7 (July). I hope this clears things up. Let us know if you still don't understand.

Continuity

So you probably want to know our position on "canon" and continuity. If you want a detailed breakdown of the levels of officiality, see Nathan Butler's STAR WARS Timeline Gold. To me there are only three levels. The STAR WARS films are "canon," meaning that they take precedence over everything else because George Lucas started it all and what he says goes. Everything else besides the movies, be it video games, books, etc. are one of two things: in-continuity or out-of-continuity. Sometimes it's hard to know what materials Lucasfilm considers in-continuity. Let's look at a few individual cases relevant to the Clone Wars:

NEW DROID ARMY (for the Gameboy Advance) - In a recent Star Wars Insider HoloNet News article, Wat Tambor was rescued. The article even mentioned that he was captured in NEW DROID ARMY, thus tying it in with the overall continuity. NDA was also recently placed in an official Clone Wars timeline.

CLONE WARS (for the Gamecube, Xbox, and PS2) - In the CLONE WARS video game there was a huge battle on Raxus Prime. BOBA FETT: CROSSFIRE told that battle from Boba's perspective. Plus, CLONE WARS was placed in an official timeline, thus officially tying it in with the overall continuity.

GALACTIC BATTLEGROUNDS: CLONE CAMPAIGNS (for the PC) - In the CLONE WARS video game, Alaris Prime, a Kashyyyk moon, was already in the hands of the Confederacy. GALACTIC BATTLEGROUNDS: CLONE CAMPAIGNS tells the story of how Alaris Prime was taken by the Confederacy, thus tying it in with the overall continuity. Also, GALACTIC BATTLEGROUNDS: CLONE CAMPAIGNS was recently placed in an official Clone Wars timeline.

STAR WARS TALES - The stories in the STAR WARS TALES comic series are a tough thing for all continuity buffs. Although they are stamped with the "Infinities" seal, there are some stories that seem to fit okay. Stories like VADER VS. MAUL and SKIPPY THE JEDI DROID are too outrageous for anyone to even consider them a part of continuity. However, there are two Clone Wars stories in TALES, TIDES OF TERROR and THE LESSON, that don't seem to contradict anything in the continuity. Also, Chris Cerasi gave an explaination of "Infinities" and "Canon" in an "Ask the LucasFilm Jedi Council" answer back in 2001. You can read his take on it, here, but it's really up to you to decide whether these events "really" took place.

We could go on all day arguing about whether something is in-continuity or not because Lucasfilm doesn't always make it clear. Then we have Randy Stradley inciting fanboy riots by toying with the idea of ditching continuity altogether.  But that's another matter. My advice is this: Don't get caught up wondering what Lucasfilm considers to be in-continuity.  Read our summaries, go out and buy the item, and decide for yourself because continuity really is a personal matter. And it's ALL fiction that's meant to be fun anyway.
