Storm Fleet Warnings

Author: Jude Watson
Publisher: Scholastic

Summary: Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker were returning to Coruscant from a mission. Along the way, they had to pass through the Llon Nebula when they caught sight of a small fleet of freighters flying in an unusual flight pattern towards the space port they were headed for. Obi-Wan noticed that the freighters were heavily armored, and realized that they were part of the Storm Fleet, a fleet of heavily armored and armed ships disguised as freighters to move unnoticed in the galaxy. The pair followed the ships to the spaceport, where Obi-Wan found a contact that he and Qui Gon Jinn has made years ago, and asked him to find out where the ships were going. Their contact, Fizz, reluctantly agreed to help. After causing a malfunction on one of the ships, Fizz approached one of the guards and knocked him out. He entered the ship, returned shortly, and told them that the fleet was headed to the Cyphar system, where negotiations with the Separatists and the Cyphar government were going slowly. The Separatists wanted a base on the planet, and the Jedi realized that the fleet would be there to intimidate the local government.

Anakin wanted to do something about the fleet, but Obi-Wan wanted to go back to the Jedi Temple and warn them.

Just then, the fleet took off. Anakin and Obi-Wan followed the fleet and began to harass them, flying in and out of the formation, and then led them into an asteroid belt. The ships followed and several were destroyed by impacts, forcing them to turn away and return for repairs, which would make them late for the negotiations. The Jedi returned home to Coruscant with the news of the fleet.

What Worked: This was a pretty good story, with several good elements. Going into this story, I was a little skeptical, for I'm not a big fan of Scholastic's works in Star Wars. This story has several redeeming qualities to it.

One was the relationship between Obi-Wan and Anakin. The war is only a couple months in, and we can see that Anakin and Obi-Wan are a bit divided over things. Anakin noticed that "The Clone Wars had ripped them apart" and "There was a wall between them now." This little point was noticed later on by Obi-Wan in Star Wars: Republic #50: The Defense of Kamino, and we can see that the two are having their troubles over many things. This, I think sets up some of the most crucial parts in Episode III.

There is some pretty interesting action points in this story. We get to see Anakin and Obi-Wan take on a couple warships in their fighters and a little bit of asteroid chasing makes it a fun and fairly entertaining story to read.

What Didn't Work: This was a fun story, but there was little point to it, and it doesn't really seem to connect to any of the larger stories. It is a little too short to really make much of an influence on the overall story line of the Clone Wars, except the Obi-Wan/Anakin relationship as noted above. This isn’t a big issue with the story line, but seeing as that there is no mention thus far of the Storm Fleet, we can only hope that this is a reference to a future story somewhere.

Overall: An entertaining story, but far too short to fully enjoy.
