Republic #69: Dreadnaughts Of Rendili Part 1

Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Script: John Ostrander
Art: Jan Duursema

Reviewed by Andrew Liptak

Summary: Over the planet Rendili, a Republic fleet and a Confederation planetary defense force face off in orbit. Master Plo Koon and Jan Dodonna go over to negotiate with the fleet commander, only to be arrested along with the commander by loyalist forces. In the meantime, Obi-Wan Kenobi, searching for an exploration ship, finds it with rogue Jedi Quinlan Vos. Vos is on the run from Dooku's forces, and the two team up to fight the droids sent after him. However, Asajj Ventress and Skorr are also following Vos, and the four engage in a massive lightsaber battle.

What Worked: This issue rocked the entire Clone Wars comics series. As I mentioned on a message board to Jan, I don't know how they manage to top every issue that they produce. It seems that every issue that they write and draw up is better than the last one. I am eagerly awaiting their next couple (hundred) comics, just to see how good it can get. As I said, this issue rocked. We see two storylines come together, Anakin's and Obi-Wans meeting with the entire Quinlan Vos story arc, something that we should have seen coming for a while. This is the biggest point. Plus we get to see more of Obi-Wan and Ventress battles, for those two aren't done with each other yet. And, there's the promise to fans that we're to see some fleet battles, something that's been requested more times than I can count. While it wasn't in this issue, we see the seeds of such a battle planted early on. Overall, the story is incomplete, for we still have two more issues in this little trilogy to see. However, this one focuses mostly on Ventress, Quinlan and Obi-Wan, something that I've been waiting to see for a while. Thus, this is a story that has been brewing for some time, and it was written very well. We see Quinlan and Obi-Wan talk for a little while, especially about the past, but we also get to see Obi-Wan lecturing Ventress about some of her ways, and we can really see how she has fallen. Plus we get to see Ventress riding on a Rancor, which is just plain cool. Art-wise. Man, these issues get better and better. This is easily the best yet, and I don't know how many more times I'll say that in a review. Many more I think. The panels, drawings, angles and action was at it's highest peak yet, and I think that we'll see it go even higher. Duursema can really capture a lightsaber battle and action in a story, and this issue shines because of it. Plus, top it off with an outstanding cover that just glows, and we've got a winner.

What Didn't Work: Nothing.

Overall, The explosive beginning to an important and exciting trilogy!

Rating: 10/10
