Review: Star Wars: Republic #61 - Dead Ends

Summary:

Republic #61 is a nice breather from the Clone Wars battlefront. Starring Bail Organa, this issue begins with the Senator's ship coming under attack by a fleet of pirate vessels. Bail calls in for Jedi support and his ship is then escorted back to Coruscant where Bail is met by Mon Mothma, we learn that Bail's wife recently had a miscarriage, and that this is one of several miscarriages she has had in their effort to have a child (we all know where this is leading).

After a visit to the Senate to hear the Jedi's latest report on the war, Bail is visited by former Supreme Chancellor Finis Vallorum who warns him that Chancellor Palpatine is a threat to the ways of the Republic, and that he will not give up his emergency powers willingly. He accuses Palpatine of being the mastermind behind his fall, and informs Bail that Palpatine was behind the recent attack on Organa's ship. Bail is a skeptic at first, but he soon starts to believe Vallorum's accusations.

And I won't spoil any more of the story than that, but it's got a great ending, and it's a first step into a new era of Star Wars.

The writing:

What can I say, it's John Ostrander, there aren't too many of his comics that I recall not liking, despite that I felt this issue was a little disjointed, I still give this a 9.2 out of a possible 10.

The art:

I havn't seen any work from either Brandon Badeaux or Armando Durruthy, but I dig it. It's a little more exaggerated then usual, the characters don't look an awful lot as they do in the movies, but they managed to capture their essense pretty good. I dig it. Excellent coloring job by Brad Anderson. I give it a 8.0 out of 10.

The Cover:

I likeBrian Ching's work, but the inside work in this book and the cover are quite a bit different. But it's still a pretty solid effort, I give it a 7.5.

All in all the final score I give it is: 8.5
