Republic #54: Double Blind

Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Script: John Ostrander

Summary: Jedi Knight Quinlan Vos was attempting to sell Republic codes to infiltrate the Separatist ranks when he was caught by Jedi Agen Kolar and a trio of Clone Troopers. After a short gunfight, he was captured and brought to a speeder. Kolar refused to listen to the Jedi. Vos soon escaped after an accomplice, Khaleen, distracted his captors. After a long chase, Vos escaped, and elements of a larger plan appear.

What Worked: I was fairly surprised by this issue. From the cover, I had thought that the idea of an issue focusing on a Jedi traitor seemed to detract from the overall Clone Wars storyline. I was wrong. This issue was pretty entertaining, and exciting at that. The storyline was a short game of hide-and-seek between Vos and Kolar, with plenty of lightsaber fights, chases and some good lines thrown in for good measure. In addition, the end reveals a sort of development with Vos, which might mean that he's going to appear in the future soon. He's trying to turn to the Separatists to become an inside agent, but the question arises: can he do so without falling?

There is a very good psychological element here, as the Jedi Council is trying to convince the Separatists that they do have a real agent, not a plant. Ki-Adi- Mundi mentioned that it was regrettable that they were forced to lie to another Jedi, and an intelligence agent mentioned that it was necessary for that to happen, which might lead to other things in the future.

Once again, I was impressed with the art team with this issue, mainly because of their ability to pack so much into a scene. They did a great job with this issue. Judging from some of the previous Republic issues before the Clone Wars arc, this is the best set thus far.

Finally, at $2.99 US, this comic is well within the price range of most everyone.

What Didn't Work: As I mentioned above, an issue devoted to a Jedi Fugitive seems to drift a little, and while it works, it doesn't seem to contribute to the overall Clone Wars story arc too much, although that might change in the future.

The only other thing is that this issue could have been longer. I would have liked to see more of Kolar and Tookarti, which might have helped the story some.

Overall, This is a very good comic, and should be picked up by anyone interested in the Clone Wars.

Rating: 8/10
