Duel

Author: Timothy Zahn
Publisher: Star Wars Insider (Paizo Publishing)
Publication Date: August 2003

Summary: A commander is trapped in a city, with vital information on how to enter it. Both the Separatists and the Republic want him alive. His entire force of clones has been wiped out and he is faced with a hailfire droid. Then his reinforcement arrives in the form of Master Yoda, who engages the droid and gets the commander out.

What Worked: Timothy Zahn is one of my favorite authors, and this short story was a delight to read. Unlike most of his works, Zahn doesn't focus much on the politics, but just the raw action. He wrote a story that was almost like some other war stories in urban settings, and he gets it right. There's rubble, abandonment and the enemy in this story, and it really shows a glimpse of the Republic's battles in the war.

One thing that was very good to read was Yoda. The little green master comes back for a taste of action, taking on a Separatist Hailfire rocket droid almost with ease. Zahn also paces things very well, resulting in an excellent story for Zahn and Star Wars fans.

What Didn't Work: Like the other stories in this booklet, it's far too short.
