Significance in the Clone Wars
Atraken was a major source of the mineral Doonium for the galaxy. Shortly after the Clone Wars started, the planet was taken by the Confederation, who began using the planet's mining systems for their side of the war. The Republic moved in to take control of the planet, in a battle that took nearly a year of ground warfare. The Separatists dug in their defenses and release biochemical weapons into the planet's surface to deter the Republic army. The move killed nearly 90 percent of the planet's civilian population, and rendered the world inhabitable in the years to come. The surviving population fled to the planet's moon with a breathable atmosphere until they could be resettled.
